Substantiation In de studie werd aangetoond dat complement C5 remming de progressie van geografische atrofie over een duur van 12 maanden vertraagde. Avacincaptad pegol is voor een andere patiëntgroep bedoeld dan de huidige geneesmiddelen. In de studie is gekeken naar atrofie net buiten het centrum. Bij aanvang is het centrale deel van het netvlies (macula) nog niet aangedaan bij 2/3 van de ogen (bij 1/3 begint de geografische atrofie in het centrum), na 5-6 jaar blijkt het centrum vaak wel aangedaan te zijn geraakt.

Additional remarks De droge vorm van AMD is de meest voorkomende (80%), maar de minst ernstige vorm van leeftijdsgebonden AMD. Het eindstadium is geografische atrofie, uit onderzoek blijkt dat 3% boven de 70 jaar late AMD heeft. De verhouding geografische atrofie ten opzichte van de natte AMD is ongeveer 50%/50%. Bij aanvang is het centrale deel van het netvlies (macula) nog niet aangedaan bij 2/3 van de ogen (bij 1/3 begint de geografische atrofie in het centrum), na 5-6 jaar blijkt het centrum vaak wel aangedaan te zijn geraakt. Dit betekenend dat van de 1,5 miljoen mensen boven de 70 jaar in Nederland 11.880 patiënten maximaal in aanmerking komen indien alle patiënten geholpen zouden worden voordat het centrum aangedaan is.
